Estate Car Hire is an independent guide and price comparison site for people who want to rent an estate car, also known as a station wagon. We don’t own any cars and we aren’t a rental company. We help you compare estate hire prices from established suppliers and give you the practical information you need to book the right car.
Why We Focus on Estate Cars
General car hire sites treat estates as an afterthought. Most listings say “Skoda Octavia or similar” without making clear whether you’ll get the estate or the hatchback, and the difference can be a whole suitcase. We built this site around that one question: how do you make sure the car you book actually has the boot space you’re paying for?
That’s why our guides explain rental class codes, compare real boot capacities between models, and tell you plainly when an estate isn’t the right choice. In the US and Australia, for example, estates have almost vanished from rental fleets, and we’d rather point you to a suitable SUV than pretend otherwise.
How We Research Our Guides
- Vehicle figures such as boot capacity come from manufacturer data, cross-checked against independent reviews from What Car?, Parkers, Carwow and Top Gear.
- Licence, travel and legal requirements come from primary sources: GOV.UK, the DVLA and the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA).
- Rental classes and fleet details are checked against suppliers’ own fleet listings and the ACRISS vehicle classification standard used across the rental industry.
- Every guide lists its sources at the bottom of the page, with links, so you can check anything we say.
Rental fleets and terms change regularly. We review our main guides at least every six months and update them when models leave production, rules change or suppliers alter their terms. If you spot something out of date, please tell us and we’ll correct it.
How Booking Works
When you search for a car on this site, prices come from our booking partner, which compares rates from all the top rental companies. When you book, your contract is with the rental company, not with Estate Car Hire.
That means questions about an existing booking, payments, cancellations or insurance claims need to go to the rental company directly. We can’t access or change your booking. We’re happy to help with general questions about choosing and hiring an estate car.
Always read the rental terms before you pay, in particular the insurance excess, fuel policy, mileage allowance and any cross-border rules.
How This Site Is Funded
Estate Car Hire is free to use. We earn a commission from our booking partner when someone books a car through links or search tools on this site. The commission doesn’t change the price you pay.
Commission never decides what we write. We don’t accept payment for coverage, we don’t rank suppliers in exchange for money, and we point out downsides such as high excesses, reduced boot space in plug-in hybrids, and categories that don’t guarantee an estate body.
